I have watched a couple people I know start up a WordPress site with the hopes of having the best blog in the world. Sure, their intentions were good but they didn’t really put much thought or effort into the design of their sites. They thought a basic “throw-together” was a good idea and they left their design at that!

This was a huge mistake, and one that I felt the need to address with them. Because of this, I decided to make this blog called the Best Design Practices for Your WordPress Site.

Best Design Practices for Your WordPress Site

    • Planning – if you want success from your blog you need to plan first. Sure, you can set up a WordPress site/blog in as little as 30 minutes but before you do, plan it out! Ask yourself some integral questions and then write down the answers. Questions like:
      • What do I want to get across to my viewers? If you are in a network marketing business you’ll want to offer informatin on the products you promote (which will include good pictures and banners for added support). Perhaps customer testimonials would be beneficial? A testimonials section or even a page may be a good idea.
      • Do I want to get people to give me their emails? If you want to get leads (names and emails) you’ll need to plan on using sign-up forms to capture your leads. A sign up form usually requires you to be offering something of value to your viewer. Product promotions are not something of value, you’ll need to come up with something more than that. I offer a free eBook and a form to gather lead information, think along those lines to get leads.
      • Do I want bold or toned down colour schemes? Some people like to use bold colour schemes on their sites. Personally, I’m not a big fan of bold colour schemes but I recognize that they can be useful, depending on what you are using your site for. For instance, I know a lady that started a site to promote her hand-crafted jewelry. She used a bright pink as her backgroud colour and it suited her products she sold. Some people use black or dark backgrounds but you’ll find that most sites use white or grey backgrounds. It’s up to you but whatever colour scheme you use, you can always and easily change it in the future.
      • Where do I want my menus to be? Your site menus are those links that go to different pages on your site. If you look at the top of this page, you’ll see my menu which includes Michael M Vasas | Blog | Home Business| and etc. There are a few options you could go with, depending on the theme you choose, regarding the placement of these menus. Most people keep their menus at the top to make them easy to see. There are no set rules for this but plan it out before you finalize (again, you can change the menu positions at any time so no worries).
      • What do I want my viewers to see and get out of my site? There’s a term in the business and software development world called “Use Cases”. Usw cases are lists of actions and/or events that can happen by users of software or in your case, your website.  See the Wiki page to learn more about Use Cases.

    • Sketch your Plans – I do realize that not everyone is an artist but all you need to be able to do when sketching your design is be able to draw straight lines (like you see on most websites). Draw a screen, add a banner box, menu box, body box, and even a forms box. Boxes are all straight lines and by doing so you can create a concept that will be handy when you choose your theme.
    • Take Your Time – one of the biggest problems with most people is that they want results now. Of course, you can set up a WordPress site and start blogging in about 30 minutes or less but that doesn’t mean you should go all will-nilly with it. Take your time, explore different themes to get that background style you want. Play with background colours and font styles.  These best design practices for your WordPress site do not include rushing because rushing creates situations that may be a pain to fix in the future.
    • Site Wide Banners – a site wide banner is an awesome idea and should be used. A good banner size for WordPress is: Width = 1277 px by Height= 344 px. Don’t know what that means or how to make a banner?  I can help you design one for a nominal fee, just let me know. I used to use one site wide banner but because I am in the business of teaching others to work with WordPress, I changed to a slider banner that showcases many aspects of what I do.  Again, use a banner that is beneficial to your site and your brand.
    • Take Action – once you’ve completed the above, jump in and take action/control of your site. If you are using GoDaddy to host your website, you can take these best design practices for your WordPress site and run with them because GoDaddy backs up your site regularly. So what does this mean?
